Location East Africa Capital Mogadishu Main Religion Islam Main Language Somali History In 1960, the Italian UN Trust Territory of Somaliland merged with British Somaliland into the independent Somalia Republic. In 1991, Somaliland, in the northern region of the country, seceded from Somalia. Plates were introduced in 1996.
In 1998, Puntland, in the northeast of the country, declared itself an autonomous state within Somalia. Plates were introduced in 1998.
In 2006, Galmudug, in the center of the country, declared itself an autonomous region within Somalia. Plates were introduced in 2010.
In 2011, Jubaland declared itself an autonomous region. Plates were introduced in 2015.
Somaliland, Puntland, Galmudug and Jubaland are internationally not recognized.
